What is Melanotan II? (The "Barbie Drug")
Melanotan II (MT2) is a synthetic analogue of the naturally occurring hormone Alpha-Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (α-MSH). Originally developed at the University of Arizona to prevent skin cancer by stimulating the body's natural tanning mechanism, it became famous for its unintended—but highly desirable—side effects. The media dubbed it the "Barbie Drug" because it simultaneously makes users:
- Tan (Darkens pigmentation).
- Thin (Suppresses appetite).
- Horny (Increases libido).
1. Sunless Tanning Mechanism
MT2 binds to Melanocortin 1 Receptors (MC1R) in the skin cells.
- Melanogenesis: It commands melanocytes to produce melanin without the need for UV damage.
- Protection: By creating a base tan, it acts as a "biological shield" against sunburn and UV radiation. Users with Type 1 Skin (Ginger/Fair) who normally burn can often achieve a deep bronze tan with MT2.
2. Sexual Function (Libido)
MT2 is a potent aphrodisiac for both men and women.
- Central Action: Unlike Viagra (which works mechanically on blood flow), MT2 works centrally in the brain (hypothalamus). It increases sexual desire and arousal.
- PT-141: In fact, the side effect was so potent that scientists removed the tanning structure to create a pure libido drug called PT-141 (Bremelanotide), which is now FDA-approved for hypoactive sexual desire disorder.
3. Weight Loss
MT2 targets Melanocortin 4 Receptors (MC4R) in the brain, which regulate appetite and energy balance.
- Satiety: Users report a massive reduction in hunger. It essentially mimics the "fullness" signaling, making it a powerful adjunct for fat loss.
Side Effects & The "Loading Phase"
MT2 is potent and must be respected. The side effects can be intense if overdosed.
- Nausea: The most common issue. It hits hard within minutes of injection.
- Fix: Take it immediately before bed to sleep through the nausea. Take an anti-histamine (like Zyrtec) 30 mins prior.
- Flushing: Intense facial redness and heat for 1-2 hours.
- Mole Darkening: This is the most serious cosmetic risk. MT2 darkens all pigment, including existing moles and freckles. It can make moles look suspicious, so dermatological monitoring is key.
- Priapism: In men, spontaneous and long-lasting erections can occur.
Dosage Protocol
- Dose: Start extremely low to assess tolerance. 50mcg - 100mcg daily.
- Loading: Some users "load" daily for 1-2 weeks until desired color is reached.
- Maintenance: Once tanned, dose 1-2 times per week to maintain color.
