Epitalon vs Epithalamin: what is different, and what the evidence shows

Epithalamin is a polypeptide extract of animal pineal gland, given by injection, from Khavinson's program in St. Petersburg. Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, designed to mimic it. The small human studies, on melatonin rhythm and one long-term observational study in older people, used Epithalamin injections. The famous telomere results for Epitalon come from cells in a dish. Neither is sold as a capsule by Vita-Stream; the closest oral product is the pineal Cytomax Endoluten, which has no human trials.

The difference in one table of words

Origin: Epithalamin is extracted from animal pineal glands; Epitalon is made by peptide synthesis.

Form: Epithalamin is a mixture of peptides given by injection in Russian practice; Epitalon is a single defined molecule, sold online mostly as a "research" powder for injection and sometimes as nasal or oral products.

Evidence: the human reports are on Epithalamin; Epitalon has mainly cell and animal work. Neither has a large independent randomized trial.

Human studies (Epithalamin)

In healthy older people, a course of Epithalamin injections shifted the night-time melatonin profile: melatonin rose in those whose pineal output was low at the start and tended to fall in those with normal output. It was a small before-and-after study.

A long-term report followed 266 older people for 6 to 8 years, some of whom received Thymalin and/or Epithalamin injections in the first 2 to 3 years. The authors reported lower mortality and fewer illnesses than in controls. It was run by the developers, was not blinded or placebo-controlled, and has not been independently replicated.

Lab and animal studies (Epitalon and Epithalamin)

Animals: Epithalamin increased mean lifespan by 11–31% in fruit flies, two mouse strains and rats in a 1998 study from the same research network, though the mortality rate did not change in one of the mouse strains.

Cells: in 2003 Epitalon was reported to switch on telomerase and lengthen telomeres in human somatic cells in culture, and a 2025 study in human cell lines reported longer telomeres through telomerase or the ALT pathway. Longer telomeres in a dish are not the same as slower aging in a person.

A 2025 review summarizes the Epitalon literature and notes how much of it comes from one group.

Legal status and safety

Neither is an FDA-approved drug. Epitalon appears on the FDA's page of bulk substances that may present significant safety risks in compounding, in the list of nominations that were withdrawn. The FDA's note says compounded Epitalon may pose a risk of immune reactions and impurities, and that it has not identified safety information for the proposed route, so it cannot judge whether it would cause harm.

Injectable "research peptides" sold online are not made for human use and are not checked for purity. An oral capsule sold as a dietary supplement is a different, lower-dose and much less studied route.

Pineal capsules you can buy (Vita-Stream)

Vita-Stream does not sell Epitalon or Epithalamin. Endoluten is the natural pineal Cytomax in capsule form. No human trial has tested it. Dietary supplement; not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

FAQ

Is Epitalon the same as Epithalamin?

No. Epithalamin is a natural pineal extract given by injection. Epitalon is a single synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) designed to mimic it. Studies of one do not automatically apply to the other.

Which has more human evidence?

Epithalamin: small studies of its effect on melatonin rhythm in older people and one long-term observational report, all on injections and mostly from the developers. Epitalon's best-known results are in cells and animals.

Does Epitalon lengthen telomeres in people?

That has not been shown. The telomere results come from human cells grown in the lab (2003 and 2025 studies). No human trial has measured telomeres after Epitalon.

Is Epitalon legal or FDA-approved?

It is not FDA-approved. The FDA lists Epitalon among withdrawn nominations on its page of bulk substances that may pose significant safety risks in compounding, noting it has not identified safety information for the proposed route.

What can I buy instead?

Vita-Stream sells Endoluten, the natural pineal Cytomax, as a capsule. It is a dietary supplement with no human trials, so treat it as an experiment rather than an equivalent of the injections studied.

Yes. Vita-Stream links are affiliate links (marked Paid), and orders placed with the code KymataLabs are credited to our affiliate account at no extra cost to you. It does not change the evidence notes.
