Eyes and vision: retina bioregulators, the Retinalamin research and AREDS2
For eyes, regular dilated eye exams matter most, because many conditions are silent until vision is lost. For people at risk of advanced macular degeneration, the AREDS vitamin formula has trial evidence. AREDS2 found that adding lutein and zeaxanthin or omega-3s did not further reduce progression, and beta carotene was linked to more lung cancers, mostly in former smokers. Retina bioregulator research centres on Retinalamin, an injectable Russian medicine with Russian clinical studies. The oral retina capsule Visoluten has never been tested in people.

- AREDS2 (4,203 people)
- Adding lutein + zeaxanthin or DHA + EPA to the AREDS formula: no significant further reduction in advanced AMD(source)
- Retinalamin
- Injectable retinal polypeptides; Russian clinical studies (e.g. a 24-month randomized glaucoma study, 147 patients)(source)
- Visoluten
- Oral GARMONIA retina Cytomax (A-11); no human trials; the Vita house line has no eye product
- Eye exams
- The first step for any vision change; sudden loss, flashes or a curtain over vision need same-day care
Human studies: eye vitamins (AREDS and AREDS2)
The original AREDS formula (vitamins C and E, beta carotene and zinc) reduced the risk of progressing to advanced age-related macular degeneration in people already at risk. AREDS2 then randomized 4,203 people aged 50 to 85 with large drusen. Adding lutein plus zeaxanthin, omega-3s (DHA + EPA), or both did not significantly reduce progression further in the primary analysis. Removing beta carotene or lowering zinc made no apparent difference, and the beta carotene group had more lung cancers, mostly in former smokers.
These formulas are for people an eye doctor has found to be at risk, not general eye-health pills.
Human studies: retinal peptides (Retinalamin)
Retinalamin is a polypeptide extract of cattle retina, given by injection, developed in Russia. In a 24-month Russian study, 147 people with early open-angle glaucoma were randomized to Retinalamin courses every 6 months or a control group. Some OCT measures fell in the control group and held steady with Retinalamin, but the groups did not differ significantly at the end. Other studies in Russian ophthalmology journals report on diabetic retinopathy. None of this applies to an oral capsule.
Lab and animal studies
A Russian rabbit study reported that Retinalamin limited photochemical damage to the retina. A 2019 paper from Khavinson's group describes how short synthetic peptides might act on retinal gene expression. These are animal and mechanism papers.
Where Visoluten fits
Visoluten is GARMONIA's oral retina Cytomax (A-11) and the only eye bioregulator Vita-Stream sells. Retinalamin and Normoftal are not sold there. Visoluten is a dietary supplement. It has no human trials, is not a substitute for AREDS-type vitamins your eye doctor recommends, and is not a treatment for any eye disease.
Retina bioregulator capsule (Vita-Stream)
Dietary supplement. No human trial has tested this product by name. If you have an eye condition, keep your eye doctor's plan. Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

FAQ
Does Visoluten improve eyesight?
That has not been tested in people. Visoluten is an oral dietary supplement with no human trials. The clinical studies people cite are on Retinalamin, a different, injectable medicine.
Is Retinalamin the same as Visoluten?
No. Retinalamin is an injectable retinal polypeptide medicine used in Russia. Visoluten is an oral capsule of retina peptides sold as a supplement.
What did AREDS2 find?
In 4,203 people at risk of advanced macular degeneration, adding lutein + zeaxanthin or omega-3s to the AREDS formula did not significantly reduce progression further, and beta carotene was linked to more lung cancers, mostly in former smokers.
Should I take eye vitamins?
Only if an eye doctor finds you at risk of advanced macular degeneration; that is who the AREDS formulas were tested in. Get regular dilated eye exams either way.
Do you earn money from these links?
Yes. Vita-Stream links are affiliate links (marked Paid), and orders placed with the code KymataLabs are credited to our affiliate account at no extra cost to you. It does not change the evidence notes.
